31 Upcoming BIS QCOs in 2026: Products Becoming Mandatory (May–December)

31 products becoming mandatory BIS certification between May-December 2026. Full list with IS standards, timelines, impacts on importers and manufacturers.

The Indian government continues its aggressive expansion of mandatory BIS certification. Between May and December 2026, 31 new products across electronics, chemicals, textiles, tools, aluminium, and electrical appliances are becoming mandatory under new Quality Control Orders (QCOs). If you manufacture or import any of these products, you need to start the BIS certification process now: waiting until the deadline could mean weeks or months of lost sales.

May 2026: Already in Effect

The IS/IEC 62368 migration for Audio/Video and IT Equipment took effect on May 1, 2026. This is a major change: the old IS 13252 standard for IT equipment is being replaced by IS/IEC 62368 (Part 1): 2023, which is a hazard-based safety standard. All existing CRS registrations under IS 13252 must be migrated. If you have not updated your certification, your existing registration may no longer be valid.

July 2026: Chemical Products

  • Linear Alkyl Benzene (IS 12795:2020): Effective July 1, 2026. Used in detergent manufacturing.
  • Morpholine (IS 12084:2018): Effective July 1, 2026. Industrial chemical used in rubber, corrosion inhibitors, and pharmaceuticals.
  • n-Butyl Acrylate (IS 14709:1999): Effective July 10, 2026. Used in paints, adhesives, and textile coatings.

Chemical manufacturers and importers should already have samples at labs. Testing for chemical products typically takes 6-12 weeks. If you start in late May, you will be cutting it close for the July 1 deadline.

July 2026: Electronics

  • Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission (IS 18112:2022): Effective July 26, 2026. This affects all DTH set-top box importers and manufacturers.

August 2026: Textiles

  • Cotton Bales (IS 12171:2019): Effective August 27, 2026. Affects cotton traders, ginners, and textile mills across India. Cotton is one of India's largest agricultural commodities.

October 2026: MAJOR MONTH (18 Products)

October 1, 2026 is the single biggest QCO implementation date of the year. 18 products across tools, aluminium, and electrical appliances become mandatory. This is a critical date for importers and manufacturers in these sectors.

Hand Tools (7 Products): October 1, 2026

  • Pipe Wrenches: General Purpose (IS 4003 Part 1:1978)
  • Pipe Wrenches: Heavy Duty (IS 4003 Part 2:1986)
  • Open-Jaw Wrenches / Spanners (IS 2028:2004)
  • Ring Wrenches / Spanners (IS 2029:1998)
  • Single-ended Open-jaw Adjustable Wrenches (IS 6149:1984)
  • Chain Pipe Wrenches (IS 4123:1982)
  • Open Ended Slugging Wrenches (IS 4508:1992)
  • Ring Slugging Wrenches (IS 4509:1992)
  • Combination Side Cutting Pliers (IS 3650:1981)

Hand tool importers: especially those importing from China: are among the most affected by this QCO. India imports a massive volume of hand tools from Chinese manufacturers. If you are a hardware wholesaler, industrial supplier, or e-commerce seller of hand tools, you need to get your products certified before October 1.

Aluminium Products (2 Products): October 1, 2026

  • Wrought Aluminium Utensils (IS 1660:2024)
  • Aluminium Cans for Beverages (IS 14407:2023)

Electrical Appliances: October 1, 2026

The biggest single QCO of 2026: IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 makes 70+ categories of household and similar electrical appliances mandatory. This is the updated safety standard replacing older IS 302 versions. It covers everything from electric irons and room heaters to vacuum cleaners, food mixers, and water heaters. If you manufacture or import ANY household electrical appliance, check whether IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 applies to your product.

October 2026: Textiles / Woven Sacks

  • HDPE/PP Woven Sacks for 50kg Cement Packaging (IS 11652:2017): Oct 6, 2026
  • PP/HDPE Laminated Woven Sacks for Mail/ Courier (IS 17399:2020): Oct 6, 2026
  • PP Woven Block Bottom Valve Sacks for Cement (IS 16709:2017): Oct 6, 2026

These affect packaging manufacturers, cement companies, and logistics providers. The cement industry: India's second largest manufacturing sector: will need to ensure all packaging meets these standards.

December 2026: Wrought Aluminium Products (9 Products)

  • Wrought Aluminium Bars, Rods & Sections (IS 733:1983)
  • Wrought Aluminium Forging Stock (IS 734:1975)
  • Wrought Aluminium Plate (IS 736:1986)
  • Wrought Aluminium Sheet & Strip (IS 737:2008)
  • Wrought Aluminium Wire (IS 739:1992)
  • Wrought Aluminium Rivet Stock (IS 740:1977)
  • Wrought Aluminium Extruded Tube & Hollow Sections (IS 1285:2002)
  • Wrought Aluminium Wire for Electrical Purposes (IS 2067:1975)
  • Wrought Aluminium for Utensils (IS 21:1992)

This is the aluminium industry's biggest regulatory change in years. Nine product categories across bars, rods, sheets, strips, wires, tubes, and extrusions become mandatory on December 1, 2026. Aluminium manufacturers, traders, and importers have 6 months to get certified. Given the testing complexity for metal products (mechanical properties, chemical composition, dimensional tolerances, surface finish), start the certification process by August 2026 at the latest.

What These QCOs Mean for Your Business

For each product becoming mandatory: you cannot manufacture, import, or sell without BIS certification after the effective date. Customs will seize non-certified imports. Amazon and Flipkart will delist non-compliant products. Penalties: up to ₹5 lakh fine per violation, potential imprisonment, goods destruction or re-export at your cost. For businesses with multiple affected products: prioritize by deadline date: July products need immediate action, October products should start by July, December products should start by August. For importers: factor in 4-8 weeks of shipping time plus 8-12 weeks of certification time when planning inventory for Q4 2026 and Q1 2027. Do not order stock that will arrive after the QCO date without certification.
