BIS Testing Laboratory Directory

Every laboratory here is recorded as BIS-recognized. Search by name, city or category, then contact the laboratory directly. The directory does not record which standards each one is recognised for.

What these records are

416 laboratories compiled from the BIS portal at lims.bis.gov.in. Every one is recorded as BIS-recognized. Here is what a row tells you, and what it does not.

What a row tells you

Test category
The test areas the source records this laboratory against. These are broad. They are not products and they are not IS numbers, so a category on a row does not mean the laboratory can test everything inside it.
Phone and email
What the source recorded. 415 of the 416 records carry a phone number and 414 carry an email address. Where one is missing the row leaves it out rather than showing a placeholder.
Indicative band
A cost range the source recorded, not a quotation. Across the directory the bands collapse to 4 values, and 232 of the 416 records share one of them. A lower band is not a sign of a cheaper test.
Turnaround
Recorded in whole weeks. It takes one of 3 values across the whole directory, so read it as a sense of scale rather than a schedule.
Recognition valid to
A date recorded on 352 of the 416. Where it is absent the source did not carry a date, which is not the same as recognition having lapsed, and not the same as it being current either.
NABL number
Recorded on 9 of the 416. The other 407 have the field empty, which says the number was not captured rather than that the laboratory lacks accreditation.

Two things that are easy to get wrong

BIS recognition is not the same as NABL accreditation.

BIS recognition is what lets a laboratory test for BIS certification. NABL accreditation is a separate national scheme, and a laboratory can hold either, both, or neither. This directory records a BIS recognition status for every laboratory and an NABL number for 9. Ask the laboratory what it holds today.

The cost band is not a price.

The band is what the source recorded for that laboratory, not a quotation for your product. 232 of the 416 records share a single band, so two laboratories showing the same figure can still quote you very differently. Ask for a written quotation before you commit.

Before you send samples

The directory matches laboratories to test categories. It does not record which IS numbers any laboratory is recognised for, so a laboratory listed under Electronics & IT is not thereby able to test every electronic product. Three questions worth asking first.

  1. Is this laboratory recognised for the standard my product is tested against?

Check the IS number specifically. A general test category is not the same as recognition for your standard.

  2. Is that recognition current?

Recognition lapses. Ask what the laboratory holds now rather than relying on a date recorded here.

  3. What will it charge for my variant?

Ask for a written quotation covering your product variant and the quantity you are testing.
