BIS certification schemes, explained

CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme)

This is the one most importers and Amazon sellers deal with. It covers electronics and IT products: LED lights, power banks, adapters, laptops. You test your product at a BIS lab, register, and you're cleared to sell in India.

ISI Mark

The classic quality mark. If you manufacture cement, steel, or kitchen appliances, this is probably yours. It involves a factory inspection, so it's more involved than CRS.

FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme)

For foreign factories exporting to India. You appoint an Indian representative to handle the paperwork, and BIS certifies your overseas plant.

QCO (Quality Control Order)

Quality Control Orders are government rules that make BIS certification compulsory for certain products. New ones drop every few months, so it's worth checking if yours is on the list.

How much does BIS certification cost and how long does it take?

SchemeTypical costTypical timeline
CRS Registration₹40,000 to ₹1,50,0004 to 8 weeks
ISI Certification₹1,00,000 to ₹3,00,0008 to 12 weeks
FMCS₹2,00,000 to ₹5,00,0008 to 16 weeks
Lab Testing₹15,000 to ₹1,00,0002 to 6 weeks

These are ballpark figures. Your actual cost depends on what you're certifying and how many models you have.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a free BIS certification quote?+

Just fill out the form with your phone number, product, and city. It takes about a minute. We'll match you with 2 or 3 consultants or labs who actually handle your type of product, and they'll call you back within 24 hours with a free quote. No payment, no commitment.

Is there any cost to use this service?+

No. Using bischeck.in to find an expert costs you nothing. The consultants and labs pay us a small referral fee, not you. The only money you'll ever spend is what you pay the expert directly, and only if you decide to work with them.

How much does BIS certification cost in India?+

It really depends on what you're certifying. A simple CRS registration for something like an LED bulb usually runs ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000. ISI for a manufacturer is higher, often ₹1,00,000 to ₹3,00,000, because it includes a factory inspection. Lab testing is usually billed on top of that.

How long does BIS certification take?+

Most CRS registrations finish in 4 to 8 weeks. ISI takes longer, usually 8 to 12 weeks, because BIS inspects your factory. FMCS for foreign manufacturers is the slowest, often 8 to 16 weeks. When things do drag, it's almost always incomplete paperwork, not the lab.

Do I need BIS certification to sell on Amazon India?+

If you're selling electronics, toys, or anything on a Quality Control Order, yes. Amazon and Flipkart will ask for your BIS registration number before they let you list. No number, and your listing gets blocked or taken down. It's the number one reason sellers reach out to us.

What is the difference between CRS and ISI certification?+

Short version: CRS is registration for electronics, ISI is a quality mark for manufacturers. With CRS you test your product at a lab and self-declare. With ISI, BIS actually comes and inspects your factory. CRS is compulsory, while ISI is only required when a QCO covers your product.

Can a foreign manufacturer get BIS certification?+

Yes, through FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme). You'll need an authorized Indian representative to handle the paperwork and talk to BIS for you. It's a bit more involved than domestic certification, but overseas factories do it every single day.

How are experts verified?+

We check every consultant and lab before they're listed. They need BIS or NABL recognition, at least 3 years of experience, and a track record of successful certifications. If a client reports bad service, we remove them. We'd rather have fewer experts than ones who waste your time.

Do I need a BIS consultant or can I do it myself?+

You can do it yourself, and plenty of people do. But there's a lot of paperwork and back-and-forth, and one mistake can set you back weeks. Most first-timers, especially importers, find a consultant saves them more in time than it costs.

How do I find a BIS-approved testing lab?+

BIS keeps a directory of recognized labs, and we list them with contact details in our lab directory so you can compare. Or just ask the consultant we match you with, they'll usually have a lab they work with regularly and can get you in faster.
